Coretek Services Summer Picnic 2012

2017-07-27T00:01:07+00:00 August 22nd, 2012|Uncategorized|

As another end-of-summer draws near, and with the 3rd annual Coretek Services Summer Picnic behind us, I just want to take a moment and thank everyone involved for the hard work it must have taken to put together, and the fun spirit it provided for all of us in attendance.  It really is nice to get the great folks at the core of Coretek together — along with family and friends — in such an informal and comfortable atmosphere.

By the time the picture above was taken, many of us had broken out for a relaxed game of Mushball, gone off for a lazy pedal-boat ride around the pond, chased the kids off to the bounce house, etc.; all after having a wonderful spread of food, drink, snacks, and mostly-slushy slushies.

Then as the shadows grew long, and after some advice on extreme low-speed driving (“…it’s 15mph in the park folks; just go 10 to be safe…”) from the Sheriff Department, it was time to load up an arm-full or two of leftovers, and head off until next year.

See you then…

Happy New Moment!!

Happy New…  Moment?

It is often said that there are two kinds of people:

  1. Those that see New Years Day as your one chance of the year to “start over”
  2. Those who see it as just another normal day

I see myself in both camps.

What I mean is that I try to see *every* day — and each moment of every day — as an opportunity to “start over”;  and as a result, the possibility of change kinda’ becomes the norm.  Once you become aware that you are truly in charge of your own free will, then you may shape yourself as/when you see fit!

The way I see it, each moment (not just each year) is an opportunity to a.) renew, b.) strengthen, and/or c.) rest.  Let me explain.

Like most people, I cherish the opportunity to “start over” when needed.  Sometimes, when you’ve taken a good idea or philosophy as far as it can go, the only right thing to do is to drop it and move on.  We tend to hope that these things happen infrequently, but they do happen.  And when they do, why wait?  Do you really need to withhold significant, rejuvenative change until the calendar flips?  Of course not!

It is critical that we try to strengthen ourselves when the opportunity presents itself (of course, within reason and context).  Exercising an idea — like muscle — is the only way to test its validity and see if it can withstand resistance and/or adversity.  And as a result, we improve!

Rest is a critical and necessary part of life.  However, rest is only valuable in contrast!  Since renewal or strengthening (as in muscle repair) can sometimes cause fatigue, rest is the necessary healing element that provides rejuvenation.  On the other hand, rest — in combination with rest — is stagnancy… and stagnancy is… well, it’s not good.

…But reminders are a good thing

And this is where we bring it all back around.

I have to admit that countless precious moments go by in my life that I just don’t step back and think of all the things I could do, or all the things I could be, or all the change I could effect, etc.;  I’m just doing the best I can, being who I am, in the context of that moment.

I try, but I am human.  I benefit from reminders.  And it is good to stop for just a moment, and appreciate the utility of a celebratory reminder of who we have been, who we are, and who we are yet to be!

And not to put too fine a point on it (too late), this is where I find the most value in — and join in with — the celebration of the New Year’s Day.   It is a great, big, celebration, and a reminder that each moment — any moment — can be the moment that leads to you becoming the best possible person you can be.

So Happy New Moment, everyone!  Make the best of every one.

Only companies with the highest quality human resources initiatives can be named “Metropolitan Detroit’s 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For.” This honor is highly sought after by competing companies throughout the region. These select companies will be honored by the Michigan Business and Professional Association (MBPA) on Wednesday September 22 at the Marriott Dearborn Inn. For the second year in a row, Coretek Services was selected to be a part of this list of outstanding companies.

This year’s winners practice innovative strategies and represent best practices in human resources inindustries as diverse as the automotive, insurance, hospitality, communications and nonprofit. They include Communication, Community Initiatives, Compensation and Benefits, Diversity and Multiculturalism, Employee Education and Development, Employee Engagement and Commitment, Recognition and Retention, Recruitment and Selection, Small Business and Work-Life Balance.

The winning 101 companies also vie for 10 elite awards, one granted for each category. Also an overall winner, who has excelled in all categories, will be honored with the “Best of the Best” award. The award winners will be announced during the luncheon.

The annual human resources symposium and awards program will begin with registration, networking and an exhibit gallery at 7:30 a.m. Educational workshops will follow at 8:00 a.m. The topics of this year’s sessions will include “Growing Pains in a Cautious Economy: How Does a Team Transition from a Slow Economy to Cautious Optimism; Leveraging Collaboration and Team Building to Grow your Business and Engage your Team; Looking to the Future: Understanding the New Era of Employee Enrichment and Leveraging a Digital World: The Advantages and Pitfalls of Social Media.” The luncheon and awards ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m.

“The selection, recognition and awarding of this year’s 101 companies allows our organization to showcase their best practices. The honorees have clearly demonstrated why each of them would be an ideal place for employees to work. Companies that capitalize on their greatest resource—their employees—know how to attract and retain top talent,” said Jennifer Kluge, MBPA executive vice president and chief operating officer.
